Severe Autism: A Challenge for Parents

Children with severe autism have a hard time expressing their emotions, causing stress and anger episodes to occur.

On the autism spectrum, there are many differences in symptoms between one child and another; this is why the “spectrum” is part of the definition of this disorder. There are many variations and levels of autism which go from children with communication disabilities to others who don’t express their emotions at all.

For those kids on the disorder, “Severe Autism” is not a diagnosed result or a category of children with autism, the use of this term is mainly for giving details on the level of disorder and functioning in the kids. This term also represents how much support and assistance the children need to be able to carry out daily activities in their lives.

Children with severe autism need full aid and support for most of their actions; their disabilities are higher when compared to less severe children with this disorder. Their communication is almost non-existent, and in most of the cases they’re unable to speak in an intelligible way, and most of them make scream-like sounds in an attempt to express themselves.

Sounds, light, touch, smell and taste are severely dysfunctional for them, making little sounds or overwhelming disturbances. This sensory dysfunction affects their perception of reality seriously, and most of the children space out when exposed to situations that disturb their senses.

The physical symptoms commonly shown in children with autism like lack of sleep, mood disorders, and eating habits are present in severe autism too. These are often confused with normal behaviors or unapparent signs of autism, but they are part of the disorder as well, affecting them just as the severe versions of the symptoms shared by autistic children.

The Autism Spectrum is not yet fully understood as it stills manages to impress experts with the variety of characteristics a person can show that are still in the category of this spectrum disorder. Parents need to be aware of the level of autism their children can have and act accordingly by following the specifications of the specialists. Autism Soccer has children from all the levels of autism, and with more than four years of experience in the matter, they’re up to the task. Contact them for more information.
Early depression can occur in children with severe autism, making this a matter of concern for parents.

7 Signs your Child is an Introvert

When your children are introvert, you need to work with them to find activities that are fulfilling.
Children normally show their personalities when they are growing. For example, there are kids who like to share things with others, the ones who like to do activities outside the home, the ones who like to stay at home and read a book, etc. Children's personalities are shown in a variety of ways, especially when they are surrounded by others. In this way, some of those children take a turn into a more independent behavior, which means that they might be introvert. But you might be wondering how can you know if you are in front of an introverted kid, right? That’s why I’m here to teach you the 7 signs of an introverted child.

What’s introversion?

The expression and relation to the outside world are the defining factors of introversion. It’s not to say that children are odious, they just feel more comfortable being alone. Their energy can be drained from forced social interactions, which means that they don’t feel in their elements when surrounded with crowds.

On the other hand, shyness is often confused with introversion because there are behaviors that are quite similar, for example, people with shyness are often uncomfortable or feel especially awkward  when they are around other people, while introverts usually put a wall in front of them to not be bothered. But you need to know that these conditions are not the same.

Also, this term should not be confused with autism because they are two different conditions. In fact, an introvert person might be autistic or not. With that in mind, you need to check these signs that might indicate your child is an introvert:

  1. They prefer to spend time alone: Introverted children love to be alone and spend time with themselves. This is the main characteristic of this condition.
  2. They tend to have an emotional reservation: These kids will not be the ones who express their distress or happiness out loud. While they experience emotions just like you and me, they are much more reserved on their approach to them.
  3. They choose their activities carefully: Introverted children are highly knowledgeable with their own limitations and preferences. This means that they watch and analyze if their endeavors are going to be efficient for them.
  4. They avoid small talk: Their personalities are reserved and, often, small talk seems out of depth to them. Introverted children prefer to talk about subjects that are much more solid by dismissing trivial conversation.
  5. They have lasting friendships: Introverted children avoid using their small amount of social effort into meaningless friendships. This means that while they might have fewer friends, they will be more close to them.
  6. They need time to do activities by their own: The truth is that introverted children prefer to spend some of their time alone thinking, reading, watching something or playing alone.
  7. They are highly self-aware: Introverted personality helps children to be self-aware. They know themselves better than anyone else and they are incredibly strong and judgemental on their owns opinions.

Have you checked some of these characteristics on your child? Then, it’s time to take a look at the way you perceive their interactions with the rest of the world. Encourage them to be proud and positive with the way they are; that will make them feel loved and welcomed at home.
