5 Ways to Help the Autism Community

Let's work to make the world a more inclusive place.

Have you ever met someone on the autism spectrum before? In the United States, about 1 in 68 children live with the condition. Their lives might be a little different from ours and, they might see the world in a unique perspective; but just like anyone else, they simply want to be happy. They want to have as much control as they can over their lives and have access to the services they need to improve them.

However, that’s not always the case. Even though we live in a more inclusive society, they still have to face discrimination and have trouble finding personalized therapies that, thoroughly, understand theirs and their families’ needs. There is still room for so much more research, as we’re still far from understanding what autism is, what it implies and how different autistic people’s brains truly function.

Whether you’re part of the community or you simply want to get involved in helping people with special needs, here are five ways in which you can join autistic individuals’ efforts to overcome their struggles.

Learn and discuss

The first thing you should take care of is having an open mind. People who don’t know anyone on the spectrum hardly ever get interested enough to understand what autism really is. There are a lot of general misconceptions, so educate yourself and bring the issue to a topic of conversation whenever is possible. Discuss what you know and spread awareness, start doing research and ask yourself some of these questions: are all autistic individuals the same? How many types of autism are there? What are the best ways to communicate with someone with autism? Ask friends if they know any autistic people and what do they think about the disorder. This can be an opportunity to talk about it without forcing it.

If you know someone with autism, be a good friend

There are many ways in which you can directly help if you know someone with ASD or a family with an autistic child. You can choose to leave them be or actively assist them as a friend. Give the families a respite from a life of therapies and medicines by inviting them over, talking to them, letting them know you’re there if they need you. If you have a child, organize play dates with their kid; families with autistic children can easily get isolated, and their kids will probably have trouble making friends, but they need it as much as any ‘typical’ boys and girls. It will help them learn social cues and interact with others. You might realize that these play dates might not be traditional, but they don’t have to be any less fun.

Become an advocate

Whether you’re someone with autism yourself or you want to help, speaking up is a great way to continue on this road. Become a public voice and spread as much information as you can. The Internet gives us the opportunity to reach people we would have never thought possible before, so you shouldn’t be afraid to use new tools to inspire others to take action!

Accept and listen more often

If you want to advocate for a cause, you have to be the primary example of the behavior you want to see in the rest of society. It’s not only about giving money and saying you support the autism community, but it’s also about listening to understand their needs and accept them just as they are. Value each person for their individuality, not for being part of the community you want to join. Make connections, make friends and help others see there’s nothing wrong with letting autistic individuals into your life.

Find ways to be more active

Look for organizations who work every day to help the autism community and join their efforts! Participate in their activities and spread information, so everyone gets to know what we’re up to and what our goals are. It’s essential that people understand why what we do is so important and why should they care. Find foundations like Autism Soccer and get involved with what we do. For many of us, Christmas is a time of love and companionship. It’s a period when we think about how lucky we are for all the people we have in our lives, and we celebrate for the new year that is to come. For Autism Soccer, it’s also a time to remember that not all of us are the same and that our circumstances can sometimes make it harder to find joy during the festivities.

The holidays are especially wonderful for children. It’s an opportunity to dream, to believe in magic and to realize that all things are possible if there’s love in your life. Not one child should spend this season without having someone who cares for them and who shares this beautiful day with them. No matter their background, circumstances, or if they have any type of disability, all children are and deserve exactly the same. They deserve happiness and joy. They deserve hope.

We take this job seriously. Every day we wake up thinking about how we can make children happier, how we can help them dream of a better future. That’s what inspires us and motivates us all year long. Christmas isn’t different. This season we’ve given around 1,500 gifts and toys to children in Florida, and we know that we can always do more! However, we need your help.

Where Is Autism Soccer Going Now?

The future looks bright for this amazing organization.

In 2012, we started Autism Soccer with the hope of helping children with autism spectrum disorder. It was a simple goal, inspired by our CEO Oscar Amuz’s desire of making a difference in his community. All great ideas start just like that: by first believing in ourselves and making our way up, step by step. There have been an enormous amount of volunteers and friends that have helped us along the way. We wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for them. We couldn’t aspire for more if it weren’t for them. But now, we are aspiring for more!

In these past five years, we’ve helped around 2,000 children with intellectual and physical disabilities, going beyond assisting autistic individuals. Through soccer lessons, we’ve taught them the importance of sports in their life, and we’ve given them a space to grow up, make friends, have fun, and develop their skills. Every day, we see how sports change their lives and the lives of everyone around them, and we also see how they become happier and overcome their limitations.

Help us reach out to more than 10,000 children across the country!

So it’s only natural that we want to continue on this incredible journey and reach out to as many people as we can. Up until this point, we’ve only been Miami-based, but we’re currently looking to expand operations all across the United States so that we can help as many as 10,000 new children within the next 5 years. With time, hard work, and effort, we know that someday we’ll be able to have an international presence and have an even greater impact in the lives of thousands of children all around the world.

With over 3,000 hours of experience and a comprehensive 80-hour curriculum to train coaches, parents, and individuals involved in the organization, we do more than just working with the children. We pass knowledge forward, so everyone has the potential to change someone’s life and offer kids new possibilities and activities. Thanks to our expertise, we’re one hundred percent ready to face whatever comes in our way and to create new models and sports plans to empower our kids and strengthen their bonds with their families.

However, we know we won’t be able to do it all alone. We need people like you, who understand the value of every human being and love's transformative power to make the world a better place. When you donate, your support goes directly toward purchasing equipment, necessary supplies for our program, as well as improving our operations and administrative processes so we can continue to grow and reach more children every year.

It’s just like our founder says: “I might not be able to change the world but I will like to change my community.” Believe it or not, that’s exactly how people end up changing the world.
